A Big Leap and Iron Man News

A Big Leap
8 x 8 oil on cradled board

I finally finished another in my backyard pool series. I had a lot of fun with color in this one.

I've been posting on Facebook and ignoring my blog lately. So I thought I would mention here the exciting news that my painting 'Iron Man' sold at the Randy Higbee Gallery 6" Squared show. Yay!! I'm so grateful to have been a part of that show. There are a lot of incredible paintings left. Be sure to check them out.

Flip-flops

I painted this study in the morning...

...then made a batch of lemon curd! It's going to be so good on shortbread!
*feeling the holiday this year!* I hope you are too!

Braid

6 x 6 oil on panel

Another study of the back side of a child. This group of children were intently watching some street performers. I was more interested in the children! I'm slowly putting these figures in a larger piece. Here is a progress shot (below). It's been fun combining figures, adjusting poses, and creating a composition. I'm hoping to get it done this week.

6" Squared Sale

I'm still in shock... but I just got confirmation that my 3  paintings were accepted in Randy Higbee Gallery's fifth annual 6" Squared Sale! So now the mad rush to order the frames and get them shipped! Oh, and the varnishing! One still needed a coat of varnish!

Opening and artists reception will be Saturday, December 6th from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Costa Mesa, CA. Oh how I wish I could be there. Should be a great event!

Jump For Joy

6 x 6 oil on panel

Just finished up this small painting. It was a bit different painting over dry paint. Most of my paintings are done wet into wet. But I still think it shows the joy of the moment. What a great body position! Only a 3 year old would be brave enough to leap into 10" of water! It amazes me.

Playing around

I've been playing around with some of my paintings. I'm really like how these 6 paintings from my Lost Land Lake series look together. It really helps me remember how beautiful it was there.

Here are 9 lined up together. Sorry about the glare. The sun popped out all of a sudden!

Iron Man - SOLD

Iron Man

Finished!
One day Ironman, the next day Spiderman or maybe even Captain America. He is the greatest super hero of all because he is so versatile! I caught this moment when 'Ironman' was distracted by a hay wagon. Lots of strong sun and shadows on this day.

** I just keep hearing Ozzy singing Iron Man :o) **

Dolphin Sighting

6 x 6 oil on panel

I just finished this painting and its still very wet. I'm sorry my blog keeps sending out old posts. I'm not sure how to fix that. Does anyone else have that problem?

I love painting warm sunny waters.

Soaring Seagull

6 x 6 oil on panel

The bird-life in northern Wisconsin was amazing when I was there in August. It is so fascinating to watch them soaring and diving.

I've been wiping quite a few starts this week. I'm feeling very rusty :)

Last Days of Summer

5 x 7 oil on panel

I'm slowly getting myself organized in my studio. There are so many other things to get done around the house that I find it hard to focus on painting. But I did get a couple small ones done this week and have started a larger one. You should start to see new paintings more often.

I'm really looking forward to the autumn season here in our new house and town.

It's Pool Time!

6" x 6" oil on panel

I hope I captured the joy of this little elf as he jumped into the pool! Can anyone remember being that joyful about a splash in the back yard? It's a moment to capture for sure!

Varnishing & Painting

I'm finally varnishing these fun paintings. Once I get them wired on the back they will be ready to go!

Inspections, house hunting and packing be damned! I decided to paint today! I started this one and I'm liking it so far. I hope I don't mess it up!

I hope everyone is having a fun and productive painting day!

I'm still here

Sweetie Pie
SOLD

I wanted to make a quick post to let you all know that even though I haven't been posting regularly in a while, I plan to get back at it soon. Unexpected personal events have been keeping me from my studio. But I am still taking photos and planning paintings. Once life settles down I'll be ready to paint and I can't wait to get back at it.

Here is an older painting of mine that I really love. I hope everyone is enjoying Spring this year!

Cheese-ball

8" x 8" oil on cradled board
NFS

My mind is all about family right now with a new grandson due any day. So because that is where my heart is right now, I'm painting grandsons! This little cheese-ball will be a big bro very very soon! He looks pretty happy about that!

Hope everyone is enjoying the warmer weather that is slowing showing up!

Pink Reflections - SOLD

This is Bailey's sidekick. I painted the water in a different way this time. I had just as much fun with it. I really was trying to keep the details to a minimum by using large shapes and bold color.

Playing in the Surf

6 x 8 oil on cradled board
Purchase information

They look sun baked and joyful playing in the surf! I'm still having fun with color and trying to push my limits. I just loved the cool turquoise waters at the top and red violet sand. This is also a new size for me. The sides of this cradled board will be stained a dark brown so that it can be hung as is.

In other news, we are still house hunting and getting our house ready for sale. I've finally gotten in a weekly art class that I was on the waiting list for. Yay! So I'll at least have one day put aside for painting. Thank you to everyone who still comes to visit and comment. It really means so much to me to hear from you. I will once again be commenting regularly also once things settle down here. I apologize for being so unavailable.

Einstein

4 x 4 oil on panel

I need to get more practice with my portraits so tackling Einstein was just the thing for me. Thank you Nora for this DPW Challenge

I have never painted in color from a black and white photo before. I'm glad I gave that a try.

Bailey - SOLD

6 x 6 oil on panel
SOLD

I enjoy painting these dogs playing fetch in the water. There are so many colors and temperatures in the water to play with.

This is a week of organizing, cleaning and tossing while I attempt to get my house ready to sell. So there isn't a lot of painting going on.

Our View

6 x 12 oil on panel

Ah... the view. How sweet it could be :) I guess I'm dreaming of the tropics these days! I painted this on two 6" x 6" panels. I plan to frame these together once they are dry.

Things are warming up here today. Yay! Even thawing! I usually take my photos on my deck under the eaves. Today a BIG drop of water fell on my left panel right before I took the photo. Can you see the water droplets? I'll have to retake this at some point.

Sand Between My Toes

6 x 6 oil on panel

I couldn't resist these chubby toes in the sand. I just want to use color right now, and lots of it! There were so many yummy pinks, purples, yellows and oranges in this one.

Summer Revisited!

Summer Bliss
5 x 7 oil on panel

I think it's time to dig out the summer photos and pretend it's warming up outside! What do you think? Are you as tired of this weather as I am? I hear that there is a warmup coming. But I also hear there is 6 more inches of snow expected tomorrow. So who knows. I couldn't think of anything I wanted to paint more than the colors of warm ocean waters.

I played around with a few new colors that aren't normally on my palette. I haven't decided yet whether they will stick around, but they were fun to play with. I'm also working on applying a bit more paint.

Blue Kisses 3

It's been a long cold, blue winter. My computer did die after running for a day. A quick trip to the Apple store and I'm up and running with a new laptop! An early Happy Valentines Day to us all!

Lunch Time

8 x 8 oil on cradled board

My computer is up and running again tonight after a major scare yesterday. I don't know how I got so lucky!! I spilled water on my laptop trackpad yesterday. Now I'm not talking a few drops. It was a pretty good spill. I quickly flipped it over and tried to dry it as best I could. Then I took quick minute to back it up before I shut down, unplugged, & removed battery to let it dry out. And tonight I'm online again. Whew

I have a bunch of paintings to post. This is another in my series of animals. Rhinos are interesting to paint. All those folds! Too bad they are always standing in mud!

Black Or White?

8 x 8 oil on cradled board

Is he black with white stripes, or white with black stripes? I don't know, but I do love to paint them. I get lost in the maze of stripes when I paint them. It's pretty fun!

I've had a hard time getting my paintings photographed lately since we are having such bad weather around here. High winds and snow keep me from taking them outside, which always works best. So this one was taken in my studio. I'm hoping a good day will come along soon so I can retake this.

I had mentioned in an earlier post that I would post a side view of my cradled board so you can see how they are finished. Here is a photo of "Up in the Leaves" showing the finished sides. It will look nice hung as is, or framed.

Up in the Leaves

12" x 6" oil on cradled board

This painting is on a 1" deep cradled panel. The sides are painted so you can hang it as is, or frame it.

This 12" x 6" format is fun to use. I thought it would be perfect for this older giraffe who resides at the Brookfield Zoo. Giraffes are so fascinating. Those long legs and neck seem so cumbersome. But they really are very graceful. I know I would be tripping all over myself!

Feed Me

Another view of this Zebra at the Natural Bridges Wildlife Ranch in Texas. They are such funny creatures. I never looked so closely at a zebra before. I just love them!

Good Morning! - SOLD

6 x 6 oil on panel
SOLD

Can't you just hear this zebra screaming "Good Morning"? He is actually catching food being tossed his way from a car window. The photo source for this painting was taken by my niece in Texas. They go to the Natural Bridges Wildlife Ranch and the animals come right up to your car.

This was again a quick one to complete. I think the less I fussed with it the better. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did painting it.

I got back from Scottsdale on Sunday and I have rested for a few days. I guess I underestimated how much work it is to set up those booths at Celebration of Fine Art. I flew into Phoenix on Tuesday and hit the ground running. We worked all day each day painting, hauling, cleaning and tagging for the show. Nights were spent at some interesting restaurant enjoying fun food and drink. I was in bed by 8:30 each night exhausted! Friday night was the opening and the show will run through March.
We went from this (1st photo) to this (2nd photo). We repainted once since we didn't like the gold. Unfortunately, I didn't get a photo of the full finished booth because it was too wide. In this second shot we are still in the process of setting up the baskets but it's starting to come together. Carpet is laid and lighting is up.

Even with all that work, I would do it again. Being around all those artists and their great work is inspiring. Coming back from this show was culture shock for me. Everything is about art when you are there. Your art, their art, everyone's art. Coming home is coming back to reality where art is important, but really just to me. And my reality is full of lots of things that end up being more important and time consuming than what I paint. I've had to take a few days to absorb this. They have asked me to join them at the show next year. Maybe getting my own booth. But I just don't see how I can make that work in my life right now. Now I'm ready to keep going painting as much as I can and trying to improve my skills. I'm so lucky to be able to be a part of the CFA group even for such a short time each year. I love them. They have changed my life. Next year I need to make sure I schedule time to visit a few galleries while I'm there!
