Portrait

8" x 10" oil on cradled board

This is a portrait of my son-in-law that I finished just before Christmas. I gave it to him as a gift, though I'll have to steal it back to varnish in a few weeks.

I enjoyed painting this so much. I've been experimenting with different brushes to get more variety in my marks. Where most of my small paintings are all done wet in wet, this one was done in stages using layers of paint.

Happy Holidays!

Pink Rose

4" x 4" oil on cradled board

I wanted to try another rose. I've decided to keep some of these flower paintings on the smaller size. This one is painted on a cradled board which allows you just set them on a table or shelf and also hang them on the wall!

I couldn't resist this guy. I hope he makes you smile!

I was inspired to try painting a rose because of last weeks DPW Challenge, Another Rose Challenge posted by Kaethe Bealer. Her work is always inspiring!

The Good Life

Purchase information

My largest painting to date! And now I can really understand why people paint large! Love it! The problem is my studio won't let me go much larger than this. But it was fun.

Cacti

6" x 6" oil on panel

I wonder what kind of bird this is.... some kind of woodpecker I'm guessing. Anyone know? I took this reference shot at the Desert Botanical Gardens in Phoenix.

Popeye

I've purposely been staying away from portraits for a while. But I've got the itch to do some portraits  again! Here is my first one and I'm keeping it small to start. I can see now that I might be able to take this even further and work back into this some more.

Grasshopper

Purchase information

Here is just one more of my new paintings from my "Simple Moments" show at the Peoria Art Guild. I have 20 pieces hanging so there is a lot more to see. Opening reception is tomorrow night, Nov. 14, 6-8pm. Wine and hors d'oeuvres will be ample!

The values were my challenge this time. Making sure what was in shadow stayed in shadow. I don't really use pink that often. There has not been many opportunities since I only have grandsons! But I enjoy pink and I had a lot of fun laying it on!

I always love little girls who aren't afraid of bugs!

Pool Buddies

8" x 8" oil on cradled board

Another one of the paintings that will be displayed at the PAG show starting this Saturday. I found this composition interesting because of the comparison of these two brothers in terms of their ages and what they would choose to bring with them to the pool. The 5 year old chose his Spiderman action figure, and the 1 year old chose his Ernie toy. I think it tells a story, as they patiently wait for the pool to fill.

Holiday Treasures

The following 4 paintings will be showing in the Holiday Treasures show, at the McLean County Arts Center in Bloomington, IL. The show will run from November 14 - January 2. Opening Gala is Friday, November 13, 6-9. I'll be going with my daughter Amy McGovern who also has 4 pieces in the show!

Chilly Waters

This is one of my small paintings that will be displaying in the PAG Project Space for the next month. Opening reception is this coming Saturday night, Nov. 14, 6-8. I'll be posting a few of the paintings for the rest of the week that I've been holding back on.

I loved the pinky purples in these guys skin tones!

ME Exhibition

My Self

My self portrait "My Self" has been accepted into the ME exhibit. An exhibition of self-portraits by women artists and art students displaying at the Studios on Sheridan. Opening reception is this coming Friday, Nov. 6. Show will run until Nov. 14.

New Book: Fun in the Sun

I just finished a new photo book, and it's available on Blurb. It includes 23 color reproductions of my "Fun in the Sun" series. You can find a link to it on my sidebar or here --> www.blurb.com/user/store/cengberg.

Stepping Out

6 x 6 oil on cradled board

I needed to come up with a couple paintings for the Christmas window group display at the 404 Main Gallery. I was having a hard time getting inspired until I thought of these red shoes. This doesn't exactly say Christmas, but it does look like she might be going someplace special. And 'red' is very 'Christmasy'! I hope it will be acceptable!

Happy Monday everyone!

Small Steps

6 x 6 oil on panel

Now that I have all of my paintings done for my PAG show in November. And they are all set out to dry. I'm struggling to get back into a regular schedule of painting. I've even been throwing away a few that were beyond wiping! But then I tried this little guy. This is a simple composition that I pieced together from a couple photos I took last year in Florida. I loved his purplish pink shoulder! So mainly I painted this one in order to give him a purplish pink shoulder! ha!

First Times

8" x 16" oil on panel

I've always liked the paintings that are on multiple panels, and when put together they become one composition. I had this design in mind for a while but couldn't find a 8x16 board. So I painted this on 2 - 8" squared panels. I will frame them together as one.

I'm painting like crazy but I've slowed down on posting everything I have that's new. I've been invited to show my work at the local art guild in November. This is pretty exciting for me and I'm working hard to put together a nice group of paintings. The one above I've been working on for months and this show coming up has given me the push I needed to finish it up.

This is my first show, so any advice would be much appreciated! Thank you!

Runner on Third

Purchase information

I've slowly been working on a few baseball paintings. I've been trying to keep the compositions simple but still include enough information to tell the story. It's tricky. Here is an in progress photo from earlier.

Unmasked!

6x6 oil on panel

I caught his super hero in a rare moment Unmasked! I couldn't believe the shadow he was casting and I had to paint it.

For some, it's always Halloween!

Treasure Hunt

I've been so frustrated with my work lately. Not really coming up with anything worthy of posting... until this one. I'm happy with this painting. :o)

ACEO Dogs

I just finished 18 ACEO (Art Card Originals and Editions) cards for the Main Gallery 404. ACEO or Artist Trading Cards are miniature (2 1/2" x 3 1/2") works of art that are sold or traded. Quite a few artists are submitting these cards in different media for the September First Friday that is coming up. They asked for 20 to 30, but this was all I could get done with everything else going on.

These, along with many others, will be for sale at Main Gallery 404 in
Bloomington IL. starting September 4.

My goal with these paintings was to play with brushwork and push color. I got better at it as I went on. Keeping it fun!

Top Down

6 x 6 oil on panel

I am finally back in my studio after a short break. I can't believe it's been a month since I last posted a new painting. It's not been a break really, since I have been painting walls, baby sitting, a weekend art festival and the Tall Grass Exhibition. I actually think getting back to my studio is the break!

I had fun with color in this painting. And of course it's one of my favorite subjects!

Tall Grass Arts Exhibition

 Country Girl
10" x 10" oil on cradled board

It's been a while since I posted last. I've started a larger piece and I've been working on that. I've also finally decided on some wall colors for our dinning/living room. So I've started painting walls. Have I ever mentioned how much I hate to paint walls? Well, I'm trying not to think of that. But I can't wait to get it done. The dinning room is finished as of yesterday. The rest will have to wait until next week.

Tomorrow I head to Park Forest, IL to deliver this painting "Country Girl" to the Tall Grass Arts Association for their "Autumn's Soft Breeze's" exhibition. I became one of their juried artists this Spring. This will be my first painting in one of their shows. I'm pretty excited. The opening reception is August 7, and the show will run until September 30. Please check it out if you are close enough. They also have a very nice gift shop connected to the gallery and I'm taking 4 small paintings for the shop. Everything is priced reasonably for people who would like to pick up a unique one-of-a-kind gift.
These paintings are all 4"x4" and framed.

Boys of Summer - study

6 x 8 oil on cradled board

I painted this a week ago and I love the composition, colors and shapes. I also love the positions of each of the boys, and how each one is looking at something different. But I just want to add a bit more detail to their uniforms, so I'm going to paint it larger. I've prepped a board and will start on that soon. The next couple weeks are going to be busy so I hope I can at least get it started soon.

Ducks on the Pond

6 x 6 oil on cradled board

I'm back in my studio this week. Last week, my mom was visiting so I spent a lot of time with her. I started this painting last week and finished it up this morning. This is the first in a series of kids playing baseball/softball paintings I have planned.

Saturday night was the CIAO members show reception at the Peoria CAC, and my painting, "Summer Joy" sold! I really like the idea that someone local will have this painting. My little model was all about coming to the reception with me to let everyone know that it was him in the painting. Unfortunately it was past his bedtime! Maybe next time!

My Self

6 x 8 oil on cradled board
NFS

I've been working on this one off and on for a week and I think I'm pretty much done now. I know it should be me with a paint brush in my hand, but photography is still such a big part of my art that I thought I would include my camera this time. I used to play around with the plastic toy cameras and lomography, then develop my own film for years. Embrace the blur was my motto! I always thought my photos were unfinished but I was never sure what they needed. They needed to be painted! So now I paint from my photos and work on trying to make them more "painterly". It's a process!

Happy

8" x 8" oil on cradled board

I think the body language for these two say it all. Vacation at the beach. This is why I paint. Happy happy joy joy! :)

Spring Break

6" x 8" oil on cradled board

I know this composition has been done before. But this is a pretty common site on the beach. I took this photo when I was at Pensacola Beach during Spring Break. It was a busy place!

Shelling

6 x 6 oil on panel

I'm finally finding some time to take photos of some of the pieces I have just finished. Here is the first one

Country Girl

10" x 10" oil on cradled board

I just got back from a family vacation up in the Hayward WI area. It was wonderful! Lots of chasing grandsons and boat rides. We all had a great time I think. But I've been hard at work since I got back trying to finish up this one. I thought I had it, but now that I see it on the computer I'm starting to think her hair might need a few tweaks. Maybe I'll live with it for a day and see how I feel later.

I had a great time up in WI, but I'm glad to be back in my studio. I started another beach scene today. I'll be out of the studio for a couple days so it might be Friday before I can finish it up.

Women

6" x 8" oil on cradled board

Getting ready for our yearly trip to Northern Wisconsin! I know the weather won't be as warm as these women are enjoying, but I sure hope it isn't COLD! Lots of fishing, boating, hiking, and napping! I can't wait!

I couldn't resist painting these three gals. So much attitude here! And the color of the water was just up my alley!

Floating

6 x 6 oil on panel

This painting was done from another angle. You can see the water splashing up on the beach behind him.

Lunch Time

6" x 18" oil on cradled board

Finished this one up today. I really like this size board. I'll need to get more.

There is a lot of exciting things going on right now. I've been accepted at a gallery in downtown Bloomington, IL. I'm still working out the timing on that. And I've also been accepted in a gallery in Park Forest, IL. Then, I have at least 4 other exhibitions I'm painting for right now. More information to come!

A Good Read - SOLD

6 x 6 oil on panel
SOLD

I had time to finish this one up today. Nothing like a good read out on the beach! I'm finishing up the 5th book of Game of Thrones myself. I've been reading this series since January and I'll miss it when I'm done. But I'll probably get more things done around here!
